WHO DON571: on 9 May 2025, Papua New Guinea notified WHO of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) detected in stool specimens from two healthy (asymptomatic) children in Lae, Morobe Province — not paralytic cases. The outbreak subsequently grew substantially: a confirmed paralytic case was reported in August 2025, and over 60 environmental/community detections had been recorded by October 2025, but no single official cumulative case total was found to replace this figure.
