Poliomyelitis (wild poliovirus, WPV1) in Afghanistan - 15 confirmed WPV1 cases since the start of 2026, per GPEI's country update of 22 July 2026, including 4 new cases from Kabul, Nangarhar and Uruzgan with paralysis onset in June 2026 (most recent case: 25 June 2026). Seven WPV1-positive environmental samples were also reported, from Hilmand, Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarhar and Zabul. Total for 2025: 21 cases. Afghanistan is one of two countries with endemic wild poliovirus transmission.
