Ebola virus disease

Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in Uganda, imported from the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Uganda declared the end of the outbreak on 28 July 2026, after completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period with no further cases detected (Uganda Ministry of Health). The outbreak, declared on 15 May 2026, totalled 20 confirmed cases: 15 imported from the DRC and 5 Ugandan health care workers infected while caring for patients, with 18 recoveries and 2 deaths. The monitoring period began after the discharge of the last locally transmitted Ugandan patient on 16 June 2026. Cases were concentrated in Kampala and Wakiso districts (Kampala Metropolitan Area), with no unexplained community transmission documented. Genomic analysis identified the circulating virus as a distinct Bundibugyo virus variant. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, from which these cases were imported, remains ongoing. Declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 17 May 2026.
